They fight against the meaninglessness of life with a humanly created significance that’s difficult to attain. Neither did Ted Williams or Joe DiMaggio or Lou Gehrig. Willie Mays managed it once. Mickey Mantle, a more gifted hitter plagued by nagging injuries and less longevity, twice. Ruth? Don’t go there. We’re talking about humans here.

This season, Cleveland’s Cliff Lee, 22 and 2 at the moment, is the first pitcher since Bob Welch to record 20 more wins than losses in a season. That’s a stretch of 18 years. Brandon Webb has notched 20 wins without special soup in his veins for Arizona. Good for him—and them. If not for the Dodger’s mind-bending steal of Manny Ramirez, who has been batting close to .400 since they acquired him, Webb would have the Diamond Backs in first place.
As the 2008 season approaches its end, numbers ring true. It’s good to have that here again.
