Great Games: Chargers vs. Colts was a Great One
Great games have two requirements: 1) SPLENDID PLAY, with the outcome delayed till the very end and 2) the IMPORTANCE OF THE GAME. Yesterday’s San Diego Chargers—Indianapolis Colts matchup was both wonderfully played and important, not only because it was the first game of the playoffs for the national championship but also because it eliminated from the series this year’s MVP, Peyton Manning, one of the brightest and most gifted quarterbacks in the history of the game. Two splendid strategies, one defensive and one offensive, took the Chargers over the top.
The first was a clever stratagem for neutralizing Manning’s genius for calling plays at the line of scrimmage. The Chargers’ defense delayed getting into its final defensive formation until deep in the count for Manning’s plays, leaving him clueless about the defensive strategies he was going to encounter until it was too late for him to change plays. The result was a greatly talented quarterback (there are lots of them in the NFL) with no particular advantage in the plays he was running (there’s just one in the NFL supremely gifted at that, and Peyton is the one).
The offensive strategy was simpler. With Hall of Fame bound LaDainian Tomlinson crippled by a groin injury that he tries to ignore but that may require surgery, the Chargers trusted Darren Sproles, as gifted and promising an athlete as any team could want. Indeed, Sproles is no longer gifted and promising. He is, and has been proving himself, gifted and accomplished. In this important game, he not only accounted for 328 all-purpose yards and 105 yards from scrimmage; but he also accounted for the last score of the game, an overtime 22 yard scamper with too little time left on the clock for even the likes of Peyton Manning to turn into a score. At five foot six he’s the biggest thing in football just now.
