There have been complaints, so, yes, let me confess that there were more heroes of the San Diego Chargers’ victory over the Indianapolis Colts than Darren Sproles. Philip Rivers, a gifted quarterback, completed 20 of 36 passes for 217 yards. Antonio Gates, coming back from an injury that kept him out of practice, caught eight of those passes for 87 yards, tops in the game, including two 11 yard yarders at the end of the fourth quarter that set up Nate Kaeding’s 22 yard field goal, putting the game into overtime, where Sproles put an exclamation point on his magnificent day by running for the winning touchdown. In many ways an argument could be made that punter Mike Scifres was the star of the game, averaging over 50 yards a punt when distance was called for and time and again dropping the ball down inside the Colts’ ten yard line. Not even the great Peyton Manning can be relied on to push the ball over 90 yards for touchdowns on a regular basis. Hey, there are 11 vital athletes on the field for each team on every play. Watch the line. Keep an eye on backs. Appreciate the blocking and the defensive play. ‘Nuff said? There are lots of fine teams that could go all the way this year. Enjoy round two!
