When this series of notes started, I observed that, with the exception of George Herman Ruth, an unparalleled hitter and one of the great pitchers in baseball history, the very best in almost every case is constituted of three, four or five, occasionally more, whether that best be a position player in sports, a whole team, a university or an after dinner drink. This year’s set of college football’s bowl games proved the rule. The first three teams, each of which is the best, laid out in no particular order of excellence, are Florida, winner of the BSC’s nominal championship game; Utah, capping its no loss season by trampling an otherwise impressive Alabama team; and USC, having eaten up Penn State’s reputedly powerful defensive team and jogged to a decisive victory. In my eyes, the fourth spot, a shade off the tiptop list, belongs to Texas, with a win over Oklahoma earlier in the season, or TCU, winner over Texas.

That said, let’s confess that the shootout between Florida’s Tim Tebow, a powerful old fashioned ball-carrying fullback and a heck of a college quarterback, and Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford, a classic quarterback of NFL dimensions, was itself worth the watching. Bradford has elected to play one more year, hoping to push Oklahoma to a title, no doubt, and Tebow, thinking to craft himself into something closer to NFL expectations perhaps, is staying at Florida. Good for both of them, especially Tebow, who would otherwise have to change positions as a pro or find a coach willing to craft an offense around a powerful running back who also takes the snaps and throws the ball.

As for the professional football championship game, it looks like its going to be a Pennsylvania event. But wouldn’t it be intriguing to see Arizona outflank everyone and make it to a Super Bowl that also features Baltimore? The best NFL team this year will not be determined by the championship game in any case. Raise an open hand and smile.

P.S. Yes, on second thought I count Shakespeare up there with Ruth.
