Captain King keen to make return against Chelsea

Ledley King feels fit enough to be considered for next week's clash at Chelsea but boss Martin Jol is refusing to rush his skipper back.

King, who has been out injured since Boxing Day, is eager to return to action but Jol believes his skipper will need another two weeks on the sidelines.

He was earmarked for a return at the end of January but suffered a setback, making Spurs cautious about his progress this time around.

While next Sunday's Barclays Premiership clash at Stamford Bridge has been ruled out, facing Wigan on April 15 could be a possibility.

River Plate finally get league season underway

BUENOS AIRES, Aug 17 (Reuters) - River Plate, plagued by in-fighting among their supporters, should belatedly launch their Argentine championship campaign this weekend.

Daniel Passarella's team, two games behind everyone else, will be thrown in at the deep end at holders San Lorenzo, who are led by former River coach Ramon Diaz.

River were due to play Newell's Old Boys last Sunday but the match was called off at 24 hours' notice on the orders of a judge, who was worried about possible fan violence.

Beckham starts and scores first goal for Galaxy

CARSON, Calif. -- It was a night of firsts for David Beckham.

The English superstar started his first game for the Galaxy, scored his first goal on a free kick in the 27th minute and Los Angeles beat D.C. United 2-0 in the SuperLiga semifinals.

Beckham also notched his first assist on the Galaxy's second goal. He sent a long pass to a streaking Landon Donovan, who scored on a breakaway in the 47th minute for a 2-0 lead.

The Galaxy advanced to the Aug. 29 tournament final in Carson against Mexican club team Pachuca, which tied Houston 2-2, but won 4-3 on penalty kicks.
